FREMONT, CA: Northrop Grumman – a provider of security innovative systems, products and solutions – delivers the 1,000th AN/AAQ-37 Distributed Aperture System (DAS) sensor to Lockheed Martin for the integration on the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. The F-35 DAS is the 360-degree, spherical situation awareness system. The DAS sends high resolution real-time imaginary to the pilot’s helmet from six infrared sensors placed around the aircraft, enables pilot to see the environment whether it is day or night without any errors. With DAS, pilot has an unprecedented view, awareness of the surrounding world and eliminates cockpit problems. DAS helps pilot in detecting aircrafts and missile threats as well as providing fire control capability and precision tracking of aircraft of tactical maneuvering. It has various benefits such as missile detection and tracking, launch point detection, weapons support, Situational awareness IRST & cueing and day/night navigation. "With 1,000 sensors delivered, we have demonstrated the maturity and affordability of our DAS technology. The system provides fifth generation awareness and protection unparalleled in legacy aircraft and continues to show its versatility and applicability to a wide range of additional missions and platforms,” says David Partridge, director, F-35 Radar and DAS programs, Northrop Grumman. In addition to developing DAS, Northrop Grumman provides F-35’s AN/APG-81 Advanced Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) fire control radar. It is designed to enable the pilot to effectively engage air and ground targets at long range and provides outstanding situational awareness.
